Flåm Railway
Myrdal to Flåm
One of the world’s steepest standard-gauge railways, dropping from the mountains to the fjord past waterfalls and ravines.

Norway is a country shaped by water and ice. In the west, deep fjords such as the Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord cut between sheer mountains streaked with waterfalls, and a journey by train and boat through them is one of the great travel experiences of Europe. Bergen, with its painted wharf, is the gateway; Oslo, the capital, sits at the head of its own fjord.
In summer, a typical trip runs from Oslo across the mountains on the scenic railway, down the Flåm Railway to the fjord and on to Bergen, with an extra day for Geiranger. In winter, Tromsø, well above the Arctic Circle, becomes a base for Northern Lights chases, husky sledding and reindeer visits. Norway combines naturally with Sweden, Denmark and Finland on a wider Scandinavian holiday.
It suits honeymooners, families and senior travellers alike, because trains, ferries and boats do most of the work. Oslo and Bergen have Indian restaurants, and in fjord villages we arrange vegetarian meals with hotels in advance.

From roughly late September to March, on clear, dark nights. Sightings are never guaranteed, so we recommend at least three or four nights in Tromsø to give yourself several chances.
Very much so. Scenic trains, fjord cruises and short transfers cover most of the journey with very little walking. Hikes such as Preikestolen are optional extras.
