Spain

Gaudí, flamenco and Moorish palaces

Overview

Why visit Spain?

Spain has been on many Indian wish lists since Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and the real thing lives up to the film. Barcelona is Gaudí's city, with the Sagrada Família and Park Güell; Madrid has the Royal Palace and the Prado; and in Andalusia, Seville and Granada show the Moorish heritage of southern Spain in palaces, courtyards and gardens.

High-speed AVE trains connect Madrid with Barcelona and Seville in about two and a half to three hours, so a trip of ten days can take in three regions without long drives. Add beach days on the Costa Brava, a flamenco evening in Seville, or La Tomatina, the tomato-throwing festival held in Buñol on the last Wednesday of August.

Spaniards eat late, with lunch around two and dinner after nine, so we plan sightseeing around it. Vegetarians do well with tapas such as patatas bravas and grilled peppers, and with vegetable paella, and Indian restaurants are easy to find in Madrid and Barcelona.

Planning a trip to Spain

Which cities should we include on a first trip?

Barcelona, Madrid and Seville make a classic first circuit, with Granada for the Alhambra if you have ten days. Barcelona alone deserves three nights.

Is Spain very hot in summer?

Inland cities such as Seville and Madrid are very hot in July and August, with Seville often close to 40°C. Spring and autumn are far more comfortable, and in summer we plan outdoor sightseeing for the mornings and evenings.

Can we see the places from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara?

Yes. The film was shot on the Costa Brava, in Buñol for La Tomatina, in Pamplona and in Seville, and we can build an itinerary around the scenes you remember.

Is vegetarian food easy to find?

Reasonably. Tapas bars serve patatas bravas, pimientos de Padrón, tortilla (made with egg) and cheeses, and vegetable paella is common. Some dishes are cooked with ham or seafood stock, so it is worth asking each time; Indian restaurants are plentiful in the big cities.
