Fiords, glaciers and lakes on one long road trip
New Zealand packs an extraordinary range of scenery into two islands. The North Island has Auckland's harbours, the green hills of Hobbiton and the steaming geothermal parks of Rotorua; the South Island has the Southern Alps, the turquoise lakes of the Mackenzie Basin, glaciers on the West Coast and the fiords of Milford Sound.
The best way to see it is slowly, by road. We plan self-drive or chauffeured routes with sensible daily distances, short domestic flights between the islands, and enough nights in Queenstown for jet boats, gondolas and, for the brave, a bungy jump. Campervans are popular with families, and when road time is short we add scenic flights over Milford Sound or the glaciers.
Ten to fourteen days covers both islands comfortably. Honeymooners often add a lakeside lodge, and families appreciate how safe and well organised everything is. Indian restaurants are found in every main town, and we flag vegetarian options for the quieter stretches of road.
The sights we build itineraries around. Tell us which ones you want, and we will plan the days for you.

With only a week, the South Island alone, based around Queenstown, gives the biggest scenery. With ten days or more, combine Auckland, Hobbiton and Rotorua in the north with Queenstown, Milford Sound and Lake Tekapo in the south.
Yes. Most sights have good paths and viewpoints close to the car park, and we can replace long drives with short flights or scenic train journeys such as the TranzAlpine across the Southern Alps.
From June to August the ski fields around Queenstown and Wanaka are open, and the high peaks stay snow-capped well into spring. Snow can close the road to Milford Sound for short periods, so we keep a flexible day in winter.
