Greece

Ancient temples, white villages and blue seas

Overview

Why visit Greece?

Greece combines two very different holidays: the ancient world of Athens, Sounion and Meteora, and the Aegean islands, where whitewashed villages tumble down to the sea. Most trips start with two nights in Athens for the Acropolis and a sunset at Cape Sounion, then fly or sail to the islands.

Santorini, with its cliff-top villages and caldera sunsets, is the favourite of Indian honeymooners; Mykonos adds beaches, windmills and lively evenings; and Zakynthos has the famous Shipwreck Beach. With extra time, travel north to the monasteries of Meteora, perched on pillars of rock.

Island hotels open roughly from April to October, and the best weather for sightseeing is in May, June and September. Greek food is kind to vegetarians, with salads, stuffed vegetables, bean dishes and spinach pies, and there are Indian restaurants in Athens and on Santorini. We plan island hops around ferry and flight timings so that as little of your holiday as possible is spent in transit.

Planning a trip to Greece

Should we choose Santorini or Mykonos?

Santorini is about views, sunsets and romantic hotels on the caldera; Mykonos is about beaches, a pretty old town and nightlife. Many couples do both, as they are only a few hours apart by ferry.

How do we get between Athens and the islands?

By a domestic flight of under an hour, or by ferry: high-speed boats reach Mykonos in about two and a half hours and Santorini in about five. We choose whichever suits your schedule and luggage.

Is Greece good for vegetarians?

Yes. Greek salad, gemista (stuffed tomatoes and peppers), fava, briam (roasted vegetables) and spanakopita are everywhere, though some pies and dips contain egg or cheese. Indian restaurants are found in Athens and on Santorini.

When is the island season?

Roughly April to October. July and August are hot and very busy, while May, June and September have warm seas and fewer crowds. Many island hotels and restaurants close in winter.
