Myrdal to Flåm, Norway
One of the world’s steepest standard-gauge railways, dropping from the mountains to the fjord past waterfalls and ravines.
The Flåm Railway runs for about 20 kilometres from Myrdal, high on the mountain plateau, down to the village of Flåm on the Aurlandsfjord, descending more than 860 metres on the way. It is one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world, and the hour-long ride passes through tunnels, river gorges and snow-capped valleys.
The train stops at the Kjosfossen waterfall so that passengers can step out onto the platform for photographs. At Flåm, the fjord cruise to Gudvangen begins a short walk from the station.
It is the centrepiece of the classic Oslo–Bergen fjord route. Summer departures fill quickly, so we reserve seats in advance; the line also runs in winter, when the valley is deep in snow.
