Geiranger, Norway
A winding, UNESCO-listed fjord framed by sheer cliffs and the Seven Sisters waterfalls, with dramatic viewpoints above.
The Geirangerfjord twists between mountains more than a thousand metres high, with waterfalls such as the Seven Sisters and the Suitor tumbling down opposite sides. Abandoned farms perch on ledges far above the water. It is part of the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Take the ferry between Geiranger and Hellesylt for the best views of the waterfalls, then drive up to viewpoints such as Flydalsjuvet and, in summer, the mountain road to Dalsnibba. The hairpin bends of the Eagle Road give a classic view down the fjord.
Geiranger is a scenic drive from Ålesund and fits best with an overnight stay, so you can enjoy the fjord once the day boats have left. The high mountain roads open only in the warmer months.
