Flåm to Gudvangen, Norway
Sail from Flåm through the narrow, UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, between cliffs, waterfalls and tiny farming villages.
From Flåm, boats sail out along the Aurlandsfjord and turn into the Nærøyfjord, one of the narrowest fjords in Europe. Mountains rise almost straight from the water on both sides, waterfalls pour down the cliffs, and small farms cling to the shoreline. The Nærøyfjord is part of the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the Geirangerfjord.
The cruise to Gudvangen takes around two hours, with outdoor decks for photographs and heated lounges inside. Some departures use quiet electric vessels. From Gudvangen, a coach continues to Voss for the train to Bergen.
Bring a warm, windproof layer even in summer. For a view from above, add the Stegastein viewpoint, a platform high above the Aurlandsfjord, a short drive from Flåm.
