Oslo, Norway
A gleaming white building on the Oslofjord with a sloping marble roof you can walk right up for city views.
Opened in 2008, the Oslo Opera House rises from the edge of the Oslofjord like a glacier, clad in white stone and glass. It is home to the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, and its great sloping roof is open to everyone to stroll up for views across the harbour and city.
Next door stands the Munch Museum, home to many works by Edvard Munch, the painter of The Scream. Spend the rest of the day at the Vigeland Sculpture Park, with more than two hundred sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, and the Holmenkollen ski jump above the city.
Wear shoes with good grip on the roof, which can be slippery in wet or icy weather. Sunset over the fjord is especially lovely in summer.
