Bergen, Norway
A row of colourful wooden merchants’ houses on Bergen’s harbour, a reminder of the city’s Hanseatic trading past.
Bryggen, the old wharf of Bergen, was the base of the Hanseatic League merchants who traded dried fish from northern Norway across Europe for centuries. Its row of gabled wooden buildings, rebuilt in the traditional way after several fires, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wander the narrow timber passages behind the facades, now home to craft shops, studios and cafés, and visit the Hanseatic Museum. Nearby, the Fish Market sits on the harbour, and the Fløibanen funicular climbs Mount Fløyen for a view over the city and its seven hills.
Bergen is known for rain, so pack a light waterproof jacket. It is the natural start or end point for a fjord journey to Flåm. In summer, the harbour is busy with sightseeing boats heading out to the nearby fjords.
