About Preikestolen

Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, is a square plateau of rock that juts out about 600 metres above the Lysefjord, near Stavanger. The view from its edge, straight down the fjord, is one of the most photographed in Norway.

Reaching it involves a hike of around four hours there and back over rocky paths with some steep sections, so it suits active travellers with good fitness and proper walking shoes. The main hiking season runs from spring to autumn; winter hikes need a guide.

For those who prefer not to hike, a Lysefjord cruise from Stavanger sails beneath the cliff and past waterfalls, giving a dramatic view from the water. Set out early in summer to avoid crowds on the trail, and pack water, snacks and a warm layer for the top.
