Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in London on a bright day

Europe

United Kingdom

Royal London, castles and Highland lochs

Overview

Why visit United Kingdom?

The United Kingdom feels familiar to many Indian travellers before they arrive, through cricket, films and family who live there, yet seeing it in person still surprises. London alone can fill five days: the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, world-class museums and West End theatre, with Windsor Castle and Stonehenge as day trips.

Beyond London, fast trains reach Edinburgh in about four and a half hours. Scotland adds a castle on a volcanic rock, the Royal Mile and, further north, the lochs and glens of the Highlands. With a week or more we combine England and Scotland, or add the Lake District or the Cotswolds.

The UK is not part of the Schengen area, so you need a UK Standard Visitor visa even if you already hold a Schengen visa. We help with the application and can link London to Paris by Eurostar. Gujarati vegetarian food is easy to find, especially in Wembley and Leicester.

Planning a trip to United Kingdom

Do we need a separate visa for the UK?

Yes. The UK is outside the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders need a UK Standard Visitor visa, applied for online, with fingerprints and a photo taken at a visa centre in India. Apply at least a month before travel, and earlier in the summer season.

Can we combine the UK with Paris or Switzerland?

Yes. Eurostar trains link London and Paris in about two and a quarter hours, and short flights reach Switzerland and the rest of Europe. For such a trip you will need both a UK visa and a Schengen visa.

Is London good for children?

Very. The dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum, the London Eye, Tower Bridge's glass floor and a West End musical are family favourites, and the Harry Potter studio tour outside London is a big draw for older children.

Where can we find Gujarati and vegetarian food?

Almost everywhere in London, but Wembley's Ealing Road and Leicester's Belgrave Road are famous for Gujarati restaurants and sweet shops. Supermarkets also stock a wide range of vegetarian and Indian ready meals.
