Europe

Switzerland

Snow peaks, blue lakes and mountain railways

Overview

Why visit Switzerland?

Switzerland is the Europe many Indian travellers picture first: snow on the Jungfraujoch even in summer, cable cars rising over Mount Titlis and turquoise lakes below the peaks. Bollywood made it famous, and Interlaken even has a statue of the film-maker Yash Chopra, but what keeps people coming back is how easy it is to travel. Trains run on time from Zurich airport to Lucerne, Interlaken and Zermatt, and one travel pass covers most of them.

We usually split a week between Lucerne, for Mount Titlis and the lake, and Interlaken, for the Jungfrau region, with a night in Zermatt or a day at the Rhine Falls if time allows. Honeymooners like lakeside hotels and the Glacier Express; families like the easy day trips and the snow, which stays all year at the top of the big mountains. Switzerland pairs naturally with Paris, northern Italy or the Black Forest, and Indian restaurants are easy to find in Interlaken, Lucerne and Zurich.

Good to know

Planning a trip to Switzerland

Is Switzerland covered by a Schengen visa?

Yes. Switzerland is not in the European Union, but it is part of the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa covers it along with France, Italy and its other neighbours.

Will we see snow in summer?

Yes, at altitude. Jungfraujoch and Mount Titlis have snow and ice all year, so you can play in the snow in May or June and come down to green valleys the same afternoon. Carry a warm jacket, gloves and sunglasses.

Is Switzerland suitable for senior travellers?

Very. Trains, cable cars and lake boats do the climbing for you, and most viewpoints have lifts and level paths. Some people feel breathless at 3,000 metres and above, so we keep mountain days unhurried.

What currency is used in Switzerland?

The Swiss franc, not the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including at railway and mountain stations, and many shops also take euros, usually giving change in francs.
