Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch is a saddle of ice and rock between the Jungfrau and Mönch peaks, and the railway that climbs to it, partly through a tunnel inside the Eiger, ends at 3,454 metres, the highest railway station in Europe. From Interlaken the journey takes about two hours each way, via Grindelwald and the Eiger Express gondola or via Lauterbrunnen and Wengen.

At the top, the Sphinx Observatory looks down the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps. You can walk through the carved tunnels of the Ice Palace, step out onto the snow plateau and stand on the glacier itself.

Go on a clear day: we keep the date flexible and check the mountain forecast. Wear warm layers, sunglasses and sturdy shoes, and at this altitude walk slowly and drink plenty of water.
