About Chillon Castle
Chillon Castle stands on a rock in Lake Geneva just outside Montreux, its towers reflected in the water. For centuries it guarded the road along the lake, and Lord Byron made it famous with his poem The Prisoner of Chillon.
Inside you walk through vaulted cellars cut into the rock, great halls, bedrooms and a chapel with wall paintings. Afterwards, stroll the Montreux lakefront, lined with flowers and palm trees, or continue to Gruyères for its castle and cheese, and the Cailler chocolate factory at nearby Broc.
Chillon suits a day along Lake Geneva on the way between Geneva and Interlaken, or a stop on the GoldenPass line. Allow about two hours for the castle itself, and wear comfortable shoes, as there are many stairs and uneven stone floors.
