The Netherlands is small, flat and easy to explore, which makes it a natural addition to a Europe trip. Amsterdam's 17th-century canal ring is best seen from a boat, and its museums hold Rembrandt's Night Watch and the world's largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings.
In spring the bulb fields around Lisse burst into colour and the gardens of Keukenhof open for about eight weeks, among the tulips that Indian audiences first saw in Silsila. In the countryside, the windmills of Zaanse Schans and Kinderdijk, the old fishing town of Volendam and car-free Giethoorn are all within easy reach of Amsterdam. Families like the clog and cheese workshops; honeymooners like the evening canal cruises.
Three or four days is enough for most travellers, and fast trains continue to Brussels and Paris. Bicycles rule the streets, so keep out of the red cycle lanes. The weather is mild but changeable, so pack a light rain jacket. Indian restaurants are plentiful in Amsterdam.
