About Zermatt and the Matterhorn
The Matterhorn's sharp pyramid, 4,478 metres high, stands over Zermatt, a car-free village of wooden chalets where only small electric vehicles run. Arriving by train and seeing the peak at the end of the main street is one of the great moments of a Swiss trip.
Ride the Gornergrat cogwheel railway to 3,089 metres for a panorama of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and the Gorner Glacier, or take the cable cars up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. In summer, a short walk to the Riffelsee or Stellisee lakes gives the famous reflection.
Zermatt is a few hours by train from Lucerne and Interlaken, so it deserves at least one night. It is also the starting point of the Glacier Express, the panoramic train to St. Moritz.
