Mykonos, Greece
A row of whitewashed windmills above Mykonos Town and the old captains' houses whose balconies hang over the sea.
Mykonos Town, or Chora, is a maze of whitewashed lanes, blue doors and bougainvillea, said to have been laid out that way to confuse pirates. On a ridge above the harbour stands a row of windmills that once ground grain, the most famous sight on the island.
Below them, Little Venice is a row of old sea captains' houses with wooden balconies right over the water, now home to bars and restaurants. Nearby is the Paraportiani church, a whitewashed cluster of five chapels joined together.
Come in the late afternoon, photograph the windmills, then find a table in Little Venice for sunset. Mykonos also has fine sandy beaches, such as Psarou and Platis Gialos, for a day by the sea.
