Zakynthos, Greece
A white-sand cove enclosed by cliffs on Zakynthos, with a rusting shipwreck on the beach and startlingly blue water.
Navagio, or Shipwreck Beach, is a cove on the north-west coast of Zakynthos, closed in by sheer white limestone cliffs. In the early 1980s a smuggling ship ran aground here, and its rusting hull still lies on the sand, framed by bright turquoise water.
Boat trips from Zakynthos Town and Porto Vromi sail along the coast, passing the Blue Caves on the way, and a viewpoint on the cliffs above gives the classic photograph looking down into the cove.
After rockfalls, landing on the beach has been restricted in recent years, so we confirm the current rules and the best trip before you go. Zakynthos is a short flight from Athens and makes a relaxed island stay of three or four nights.
