Nyhavn’s colourful townhouses and wooden boats lit up and reflected in the canal at dusk

Europe

Denmark

Fairy-tale castles and a harbour of colour

Overview

Why visit Denmark?

Copenhagen is one of Europe’s most liveable capitals: compact, flat and full of water, with colourful harbour houses, royal palaces and more bicycles than cars. Nyhavn’s painted townhouses, Tivoli Gardens in the heart of the city and a canal tour past the Little Mermaid fill a first visit, while the castles of North Zealand, including Kronborg, the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, make a memorable day out.

Families can add LEGOLAND in Billund, in the town where LEGO was born, a few hours west of the capital. Copenhagen also links easily to Malmö across the Øresund Bridge, to Stockholm by train and to Oslo by overnight ferry, so it is often the start or finish of a Scandinavian tour.

Denmark suits families, couples and senior travellers who like an easy pace. English is spoken almost everywhere, cards are accepted throughout, and Copenhagen has plenty of Indian and vegetarian restaurants. Summer days are long and mild, perfect for harbour walks and outdoor cafés.

Planning a trip to Denmark

Do Indian travellers need a visa for Denmark?

Yes, a Schengen visa. If Denmark is your main destination, you apply through the Danish visa centre; we help with the application and documents.

How many days should we spend in Copenhagen?

Three days covers the city, a canal tour and a castle day in North Zealand comfortably. Add a day or two for LEGOLAND, or continue to Sweden or Norway.

Is Tivoli Gardens open all year?

Tivoli opens in seasons, around spring and summer, Halloween and Christmas, and closes in between. We check the dates when planning your trip so you do not miss it.

Is Denmark good for a family holiday?

Excellent. Distances are short, the cities are safe and flat, and Tivoli, LEGOLAND and boat trips keep children of all ages happy.
