Copenhagen, Denmark
King Christian IV’s Renaissance castle in the King’s Garden, home to the Danish crown jewels.
Rosenborg Castle was built in the early seventeenth century by King Christian IV as a summer house on what was then the edge of Copenhagen. Its red-brick towers and gables now stand in the King’s Garden, the oldest royal garden in the city.
Inside, richly furnished rooms show how Danish kings lived, and the vaulted treasury in the cellar displays the Danish crown jewels and royal regalia.
Allow an hour or two for the rooms and the treasury. The King’s Garden is a favourite picnic spot in summer. The Royal Life Guards are based in barracks beside the castle, and each late morning they march through the streets to Amalienborg Palace for the changing of the guard at midday, so you can follow them there.
