The King's London home, where the Changing of the Guard takes place on scheduled mornings and the State Rooms open in summer.
Buckingham Palace has been the monarch's official London residence since Queen Victoria moved in in 1837. When the King is in residence the Royal Standard flies above it; otherwise you see the Union Flag. Its balcony is where the royal family appears on great national occasions.
The Changing of the Guard, with bands and guards in red tunics and bearskin hats, takes place in front of the palace on set mornings, and we check the schedule for your dates. In summer the State Rooms open to visitors, filled with paintings and gilded furniture from the Royal Collection.
Arrive early to find a spot by the railings or on the steps of the Victoria Memorial. Afterwards, walk through St James's Park to Horse Guards Parade, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben.
