London, United Kingdom
A thousand years of royal history, the Crown Jewels and the Beefeaters, beside the Victorian bridge with its glass-floored walkway.
William the Conqueror began the Tower of London in the 1070s, and over the centuries it has served as a royal palace, a fortress and a prison. Today the Yeoman Warders, known as Beefeaters, lead lively tours, ravens strut on the lawns, and the Crown Jewels glitter in the Jewel House.
Next door, Tower Bridge has crossed the Thames since 1894. Its high walkways between the two towers have glass floor panels, so you can watch the traffic, and sometimes the bridge opening for a tall ship, far below.
Arrive at opening time and head to the Crown Jewels first, before the queue builds. The riverside walk from here to London Bridge and Borough Market is a pleasant way to continue.
