Madrid, Spain
The Spanish royal family's official residence, with gilded state rooms, a royal armoury and the Sabatini Gardens.
The Royal Palace of Madrid was built in the 18th century on the site of an old fortress. It is the official residence of the Spanish royal family, though today it is used mainly for state ceremonies, and it is one of the largest royal palaces in Europe.
A visit takes you through the Throne Room, the richly decorated Gasparini Room, the Porcelain Room and the Royal Armoury, one of the finest collections of armour in the world. Outside, the Sabatini Gardens and the Campo del Moro offer views of the façade.
The palace can close for official events, so we confirm before your visit. The Almudena Cathedral stands opposite, and the Plaza Mayor is about ten minutes away on foot.
