Putrajaya, Malaysia
A rose-pink granite mosque on the lake at Putrajaya, Malaysia’s planned government city, about half an hour south of Kuala Lumpur.
Putrajaya is Malaysia’s purpose-built administrative capital, laid out around a large artificial lake with grand boulevards, bridges and government buildings. Its centrepiece is the Putra Mosque, built of rose-tinted granite with a great pink dome, standing at the water’s edge beside Putra Square and the Prime Minister’s office.
Visitors are welcome outside prayer times, and robes and headscarves are provided at the entrance so everyone is suitably covered. Inside, the main hall is calm and spacious, with fine tile and plaster work. A short lake cruise or a drive past the bridges and ministries completes the visit.
Putrajaya lies between Kuala Lumpur and the main international airport, so we often fit it into your arrival or departure day. Leave time for photographs from the lakeside promenade, where the dome is reflected in the water.
