Langkawi, Malaysia
A boat trip through mangrove-lined channels and limestone cliffs in Langkawi’s geopark, with eagles overhead and a bat cave.
Kilim Karst Geoforest Park covers the north-east corner of Langkawi, where jagged limestone hills meet tidal rivers lined with mangroves. It is part of the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, and the best way to see it is from a small boat winding through the channels.
Tours usually include a pause to watch brahminy kites and white-bellied sea eagles circling overhead, a walk into a bat cave, a floating fish farm and a run out into the open sea where the river meets the Andaman. Guides point out monkeys, monitor lizards and the mangroves’ breathing roots along the way.
Boats are open-sided, so bring a hat, sunscreen and water. The trip is gentle and suits all ages. Go in the morning, when the light on the cliffs is best, and spend the afternoon on the sands of nearby Tanjung Rhu.
