Genting Highlands, Malaysia
A cool hilltop resort about an hour from Kuala Lumpur, reached by cable car, with theme parks, a Chinese temple and a casino.
Genting Highlands is a resort town spread along a ridge high in the Titiwangsa Mountains, about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur. The air is noticeably cooler than in the city, and the summit is often wrapped in cloud.
The Awana SkyWay cable car carries you up over the rainforest, with a stop at Chin Swee Caves Temple, a colourful Chinese temple and pagoda set into the hillside. At the top are indoor and outdoor theme parks, including Genting SkyWorlds, along with shopping malls, restaurants and the casino for adults.
Carry a light jacket even if it is hot in Kuala Lumpur. Weekdays are far quieter than weekends and Malaysian school holidays. Genting works as a long day trip, or as a one-night stay for families who want more time in the parks.
