Yasawa Islands, Fiji
A chain of rugged volcanic islands north of the Mamanucas, with quiet beaches, village visits and swimming in limestone caves.
North of the Mamanucas, the Yasawa Islands stretch away in a long line of steep volcanic hills, coconut palms and nearly empty beaches. The high-speed Yasawa Flyer catamaran links them with Port Denarau, calling at island resorts along the way.
Most visitors stay two or three nights. Highlights include the Sawa-i-Lau caves, where you swim inside a limestone chamber lit from above, visits to traditional villages with a kava ceremony, and snorkelling with manta rays in season. The waters around Nanuya Levu were used to film The Blue Lagoon.
Resorts here are smaller and simpler than on the main island, and menus are limited, so we confirm vegetarian meals before you arrive. It is the place for honeymooners who want to switch off completely.
