Overijssel, Netherlands
A car-free village of thatched farmhouses and wooden footbridges, explored by quiet electric boat along its canals.
Giethoorn has no roads in its old centre, only canals, footpaths and dozens of wooden bridges linking thatched farmhouses on their own little islands. It lies beside the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, a wetland of reed beds and lakes, and became famous in the Netherlands through Fanfare, a much-loved 1958 film shot in the village.
The way to see it is by boat: hire an electric 'whisper boat' and steer yourself, or join a guided canal tour. Afterwards, walk the paths past flowering gardens and stop for pancakes by the water.
Giethoorn is about two hours from Amsterdam by road, so it makes a full-day excursion. Spring and summer are the best seasons, and weekends are busy, so we suggest a weekday and an early start before the coaches arrive.
