Pfalzgrafenstein Castle on its island in the Rhine, below green wooded hills

Europe

Germany

Fairy-tale castles, forests and the Rhine

Overview

Why visit Germany?

Germany suits travellers who like variety. In the south, Bavaria has Neuschwanstein, the Alpine castle that looks as if it stepped out of a fairy tale, and Munich's squares and markets; in the south-west, the Black Forest has cuckoo clocks, lakes and its famous cake. The vineyards and hilltop castles of the Rhine Valley are best seen from a river boat, while Berlin and Cologne bring modern history and a great cathedral.

Fast trains and good roads make it easy to combine regions. Many Indian itineraries pair the Black Forest with the Rhine Falls in Switzerland, just across the border, or add Heidelberg and the Romantic Road between Frankfurt and Munich.

Late spring to early autumn is ideal for sightseeing, and from late November Christmas markets fill the town squares with lights. Vegetarian food is easy to find, every city has Indian restaurants, and city transport cards make getting around simple.

Planning a trip to Germany

Can we combine Germany with Switzerland?

Easily. The Black Forest is about an hour from the Rhine Falls and Zurich is not much further, while Munich connects well with Austria and eastern Switzerland. A popular plan is Switzerland, the Black Forest and the Rhine Valley in ten days.

When are the Christmas markets?

Most open in late November and run until just before Christmas, and a few continue to the end of December. Nuremberg, Cologne and Munich have some of the best known, full of gifts, toys and seasonal treats.

Is it easy to pay by card in Germany?

Cards are widely accepted in hotels, shops and restaurants, but some cafés, bakeries and market stalls still prefer cash, so carry some euros.

Is vegetarian food easy to find?

Yes. Germany has a strong vegetarian food culture and menus usually mark vegetarian dishes. Pretzels, potato dishes and spätzle (egg noodles) are common, and every city has Indian restaurants.
