The Brandenburg Gate and its Quadriga in Berlin on a sunny day, with visitors on Pariser Platz

Berlin, Germany

Brandenburg Gate

Berlin's 18th-century triumphal gate, once cut off by the Wall and now the symbol of a reunited Germany.

Landmark

About Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate was completed in 1791, crowned by the Quadriga, a chariot drawn by four horses. For almost three decades it stood in the no-man's-land of the Berlin Wall, cut off from both halves of the city, and when the Wall fell in 1989 it became the symbol of German reunification.

From Pariser Platz, the Reichstag with its glass dome, the Holocaust Memorial and the boulevard Unter den Linden are all a short walk away. Across the city, a long stretch of the Wall survives as the East Side Gallery, covered in murals.

Berlin deserves two or three days. Visits to the Reichstag dome need advance registration, which we arrange, and the gate is worth seeing both by day and lit up at night.
