About Statue of Liberty
A gift from the people of France, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886 and has greeted ships entering New York Harbor ever since. It stands on Liberty Island at the mouth of the Hudson River and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ferries leave from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan, with airport-style security before boarding. The same trip continues to Ellis Island, where the National Museum of Immigration tells the story of the millions who arrived in America through its great hall. Pedestal and crown access must be booked well in advance, and the crown involves a steep, narrow climb.
Allow half a day. For another view, the Staten Island Ferry passes close to the statue, and the waterfront promenade at the Battery looks straight out at it.
