Changi, Singapore
A glass-domed garden and shopping complex at Changi Airport, built around the Rain Vortex, a waterfall pouring through the roof.
Jewel is a doughnut-shaped glass dome beside Terminal 1 at Changi Airport, and one of the reasons travellers leave for the airport early on their way home. At its centre the HSBC Rain Vortex pours from an opening in the roof into the terraced indoor forest of the Shiseido Forest Valley.
Below are several floors of shops and places to eat, from food courts to cafés, and the Canopy Park on the top level adds hedge mazes, walking nets and a glass-floored bridge for children. In the evenings the waterfall becomes the backdrop to a light-and-sound show.
We usually plan Jewel for your departure day, leaving the hotel early enough to spend two or three unhurried hours here before check-in. It is also an easy stop if you have a long layover in Singapore.
