Budapest, Hungary
Budapest’s largest church, with a richly decorated interior and a dome-top walkway looking over the whole city.
Completed in 1905 after more than fifty years of construction, St. Stephen’s Basilica is the largest church in Budapest. Its dome rises to 96 metres, the same height as the Parliament, and it is named after Hungary’s first king, whose relic, the Holy Right Hand, is kept in a side chapel.
Inside, marble, mosaics and gilding fill the nave beneath the great dome. A lift and stairs lead to the panorama walkway around the dome, with views across Pest to the Danube and Buda Castle. Organ concerts are held on many evenings.
The square in front is lined with cafés and is a pleasant stop between the Parliament and the Chain Bridge. Shoulders and knees should be covered inside. It is only a short walk from the Danube and the Parliament.
