Budapest, Hungary
A fairy-tale terrace of white stone towers beside Matthias Church, with panoramic views over the Danube and Parliament.
Fisherman’s Bastion was built at the turn of the twentieth century as a decorative viewing terrace in the Castle District. Its seven white stone turrets represent the seven Magyar tribes that settled the Carpathian Basin, and it stands beside the colourful tiled roof of Matthias Church.
Walk the arcades and terraces for a panorama across the Danube to the Parliament and Pest, and visit Matthias Church, where Hungarian kings were crowned. A bronze statue of St. Stephen, Hungary’s first king, stands in the square.
Come early in the morning to have the terraces almost to yourself, or at sunset for golden light on the river. It combines naturally with Buda Castle on the same visit. A café on the terrace serves coffee with a view.
