Budapest, Hungary
The former royal palace on Castle Hill, with museums, courtyards and views across the Danube to Pest.
Buda Castle, the historic palace of Hungary’s kings, crowns Castle Hill above the Danube. Rebuilt several times after sieges and wars, the present palace houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum, and the Castle Quarter is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ride the historic funicular up from the Chain Bridge, then wander the castle terraces and the cobbled streets of the Castle District to Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion.
The terraces give one of the best views over the river and the Parliament. The funicular has queues at busy times; minibuses also run up the hill for anyone who prefers not to walk. In the evening, the floodlit palace is one of the loveliest sights on the river, and the terraces are quieter.
