Zadar, Croatia
Marble steps on the waterfront that play music with the waves, beside a glowing solar light installation at sunset.
On Zadar’s waterfront promenade, a set of white marble steps leads down into the sea. Beneath them, pipes and chambers designed by the architect Nikola Bašić turn the movement of the waves into an ever-changing series of organ-like notes.
Next to it, the Greeting to the Sun is a large circle of glass panels set into the pavement. It soaks up sunlight by day and puts on a show of coloured lights after dark. Sitting on the steps at sunset, listening to the sea play, is one of the most memorable evenings on the coast.
Zadar’s compact old town, with its Roman forum and the round Church of St. Donatus, is a short walk away. The city is also the nearest coastal base for Plitvice.
