Dubrovnik, Croatia
Walk the complete circuit of medieval stone walls around Dubrovnik’s old town, with the Adriatic on one side and red roofs on the other.
Dubrovnik’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is enclosed by stone walls almost two kilometres long, with towers, bastions and forts built from the medieval period to the seventeenth century. Walking the full circuit is the best way to understand the city.
Allow around two hours to walk the walls at an easy pace, stopping at the Minčeta Tower, the highest point, and looking down on the marble main street, the Stradun. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognise many corners from the series. Afterwards, the cable car up Mount Srđ gives the classic view of the whole city.
There is little shade and plenty of steps, so start at opening time in summer, carry water and wear a hat. Cruise-ship passengers crowd the old town in the late morning.
