Broad cascades of the Krka river at Skradinski Buk, with boardwalks, a boat ride and an island monastery.
Krka National Park protects the lower course of the Krka river, which tumbles over a series of travertine barriers on its way to the sea near Šibenik. The best known is Skradinski Buk, a wide staircase of white water surrounded by greenery.
A loop of boardwalks leads around and over the falls, past old water mills restored as small exhibits. Arrive by boat from the riverside town of Skradin, and in season add a boat trip to Visovac, an island with a Franciscan monastery.
Swimming beneath the falls is no longer permitted. Krka is about an hour from Split and pairs well with the old town of Šibenik on the same day. Morning visits are quieter and cooler, especially in July and August.
