Istria, Croatia
A pastel Venetian-style harbour town on a small peninsula, crowned by the bell tower of St. Euphemia’s Church.
Rovinj, on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula, is one of the prettiest towns on the Adriatic. Its old town was once an island, and colourful houses crowd down to the water beneath the hilltop Church of St. Euphemia, whose bell tower resembles that of St. Mark’s in Venice.
Climb the cobbled lanes to the church for views over the sea, browse the small galleries along Grisia street, and take a boat out to the wooded islands just offshore. Istria is also known for truffles, olive oil and excellent pasta dishes that suit vegetarians.
Rovinj pairs well with Pula’s Roman amphitheatre, and is a good link between Croatia, Slovenia and Venice. Sunset from the harbour wall, with the old town glowing gold above the water, is a memorable end to the day.
