Quebec City, Canada
A walled French-speaking old town of cobbled lanes and cafés, crowned by the turreted Château Frontenac above the St Lawrence.
Founded in 1608, Quebec City has kept its stone ramparts, and its historic district is listed by UNESCO. Old Quebec feels like a slice of France: French is the first language, and the narrow streets are lined with stone houses, bakeries and art galleries.
The Château Frontenac hotel crowns the upper town above the St Lawrence River. Walk the boardwalk of Dufferin Terrace in front of it, then ride the funicular down to the narrow lanes of the Petit-Champlain quarter. Horse-drawn carriages and guided walking tours cover the main sights at an easy pace.
Quebec City is about three hours from Montreal by road or train, so it works well as a two-night extension. Winter brings deep snow and the February Winter Carnival; summer and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons.
