Kathmandu, Nepal
One of the largest stupas in the world, its great white dome and painted eyes surrounded by Tibetan monasteries and rooftop cafés.
Boudhanath, on the north-eastern edge of Kathmandu, is one of the largest stupas in the world and the centre of Tibetan Buddhist life in Nepal. Its huge white dome is crowned by a gilded tower painted with the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha, and strings of prayer flags stream from the spire.
Pilgrims walk clockwise around the stupa, spinning prayer wheels and murmuring mantras, joined by monks in maroon robes. The circular plaza is lined with monasteries, shops selling singing bowls and thangka paintings, and cafés with rooftop terraces overlooking the dome.
Visit in the late afternoon, when the light is warm and the evening circuit is at its busiest, and join the walk around the stupa, always keeping it on your right. It makes a peaceful contrast to Pashupatinath, a short drive away.
