Maldives Sandbank Picnic

Sandbanks are islands in miniature: bars of white coral sand that rise just above the water, with no trees or buildings, surrounded by every shade of blue. Many resorts arrange private trips to a nearby sandbank by dhoni, the traditional Maldivian boat.

You might snorkel the surrounding reef, swim in the shallows and enjoy a picnic lunch under a shade umbrella, with the crew leaving you in peace for a couple of hours. It is a favourite with honeymooners and makes spectacular family photographs. Some resorts can also arrange a private dinner on the sand at sunset, a popular surprise for anniversaries.

There is no shade beyond what the crew brings, so take a hat, sunscreen and water, and reef shoes for the coral rubble at the edges.
