Sail out among the thousands of islands east of Stockholm, past red cottages and pine-covered shores.
The Stockholm archipelago stretches out into the Baltic in tens of thousands of islands, islets and skerries, dotted with wooden summer cottages, jetties and pine forest. A cruise from the city centre is the best way to see why Stockholmers head here every summer.
Popular routes sail to Vaxholm, a pretty wooden town with an old fortress, or to the small Fjäderholmarna islands just outside the city. Longer trips with lunch on board reach the outer islands.
Boats leave from the city-centre quays, and summer has the most departures. Sit outside on the way out and inside on the return, and bring a light jacket for the breeze. On a fine day, many visitors stop for lunch on one of the islands before catching a later boat back.
