Lovön, near Stockholm, Sweden
The Swedish royal family’s home on a lake island, with Baroque gardens and a perfectly preserved eighteenth-century theatre.
Drottningholm Palace, on an island in Lake Mälaren just west of Stockholm, is the private residence of the Swedish royal family, and parts of it are open to visitors. The palace, its gardens, the Chinese Pavilion and its court theatre together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tour the grand state rooms, stroll through the formal Baroque gardens and the English-style park, and visit the palace theatre, which still uses its original eighteenth-century stage machinery.
In summer, the most enjoyable way to arrive is by boat from central Stockholm, a relaxing trip across the lake. By road it is about half an hour from the city centre. It pairs well with Stockholm City Hall, as the summer boats leave from the City Hall quay.
