Jukkasjärvi, near Kiruna, Sweden
A hotel rebuilt each winter from river ice, with suites carved by artists, in the heart of Swedish Lapland.
Far above the Arctic Circle in the village of Jukkasjärvi, the ICEHOTEL is built anew every winter from blocks of ice cut from the Torne River. Artists from around the world design its suites, halls and sculptures, so no two seasons look alike. A permanent section keeps ice rooms open year-round.
Visit on a guided tour, or spend a night in an ice room at a few degrees below zero, sleeping in a thermal sleeping bag on reindeer skins, with a warm room for the other nights. Days bring husky sledding, Sámi culture and evenings watching for the Northern Lights.
Jukkasjärvi is a short drive from Kiruna airport, reached by flight via Stockholm. The winter ice hotel is usually open from around December to April.
