South Coast, Iceland
A slender waterfall dropping from an old sea cliff, with a path that leads right behind the falling water.
Seljalandsfoss drops about 60 metres from the edge of a former sea cliff on Iceland’s south coast, and it is unusual because a path loops right behind the curtain of water into a shallow cave. Walking behind it, with the spray all around, is a favourite moment on any south-coast trip.
A short walk along the cliff leads to Gljúfrabúi, a smaller waterfall hidden inside a narrow canyon. Further east, the broad Skógafoss is around half an hour’s drive away.
Wear a waterproof jacket and shoes with good grip, as the path behind the falls is wet and can be closed when icy in winter. Seljalandsfoss is about two hours’ drive from Reykjavík. On summer evenings, the low sun shines through the falling water, a favourite moment for photographers.
