Vík, South Coast, Iceland
A dramatic beach of black volcanic sand, basalt columns and sea stacks rising from the Atlantic surf.
Near the village of Vík, Reynisfjara is a wild stretch of jet-black sand backed by cliffs of hexagonal basalt columns. Offshore, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise from the waves, and a basalt cave opens at the foot of the cliff.
Walk along the sand, photograph the basalt columns, and in early summer watch for puffins nesting on the cliffs nearby. Combine it with the Dyrhólaey headland for views along the coast.
This is not a beach for paddling. Powerful “sneaker waves” can surge much further up the sand than expected, so always stay well back from the water’s edge and never turn your back on the sea. The basalt columns form natural steps that children enjoy climbing, but keep a close eye on them near the water.
