Finnish Lapland Northern Lights

Finnish Lapland lies under the auroral oval, and on clear winter nights the Northern Lights can ripple across the sky in green, and sometimes violet, curtains. Far from city lights, the forests and fells give wide, dark horizons for watching them.

Join a guided aurora hunt by minibus, snowmobile or reindeer sleigh, or stay in a glass igloo or aurora cabin and watch the sky from bed. Many hotels offer an aurora alarm that wakes you when the lights appear.

The lights are most often seen between late evening and the early hours. Dress warmly, be patient, and allow three or more nights to give yourself the best chance of a display. Guides help with camera settings, and hot drinks keep everyone warm while you wait.
