Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn was the summer residence of the Habsburg emperors, and its yellow Baroque facade and gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside, the state apartments include rooms used by Empress Maria Theresa and by Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth, better known as Sisi.

After the palace tour, walk through the formal gardens, past fountains and hedged avenues, and climb the hill to the Gloriette for a view of the palace with the city behind it. Families can add the zoo in the palace grounds, which dates from the eighteenth century.

Book a timed entry and arrive early, as tour groups build up through the morning. The gardens are at their best from late spring to early autumn. On many evenings, classical concerts are held in the palace Orangery.
