Salzkammergut, Austria
A tiny village of painted houses squeezed between a lake and steep mountains, in the UNESCO-listed Salzkammergut.
Hallstatt sits on a narrow ledge between the Hallstätter See and the mountains of the Salzkammergut, and its church spire and wooden houses reflected in the lake make it one of the most photographed villages in Europe. Salt has been mined in the mountain above for thousands of years, and the Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wander the lanes and the market square, take the funicular up to the salt mine and the Skywalk viewing platform, or take a short boat ride for the classic view from the water.
Hallstatt is a day trip from Salzburg through lakes and villages such as St. Wolfgang. Arrive early or stay until evening to enjoy it once the day-tour coaches have gone.
